Nailed It: Swampscott Seniors Look to Build Buzz Around New Maker’s Shed

On April 30, those interested in helping to develop – and later participate in – a Maker’s Shed are invited to gather at the Senior Center.

A Maker’s Shed is a community workshop space modeled after the Men’s Sheds concepts, where older adults gather to work on hands-on projects, from woodworking and crafts to repairs and building new items. Director of Aging Services Heidi Whear said organizers hope to locate the shed at the former Clarke School and are currently seeking grants to support the initiative.

“It’s really about guys being around things to tinker,” Whear said. “We’re looking for people who want to help create it.”

Next week’s event will feature four members of the Peabody Maker’s Shed, who will share ideas for what the space could become and begin discussions on how to create Swampscott’s own.

Once Swampscott’s Maker’s Shed is up and running, Whear said she’d love to see the group work with the town to potentially create Adirondack chairs for the Town Hall Lawn, window sill plant boxes or even little boats to sell.

The event on Friday, April 30 will start at 2:30 p.m. Any questions in advance can be directed to 781-596-8866.
