With winter weather leaving the baseball field at Clarke Elementary School covered in ice and snow, baseball will be played inside the building for the next few weeks.
A partnership of Inclyousion Sports and the Swampscott Recreation Department started a 6-week winter program on Saturday, January 10.
Inclyousion gives children ages 2 to 7 a chance to familiarize themselves with a number of different sports in a fun, slow-paced environment that is free of pressure or competition. Class sizes are limited to about 10 children to ensure the environment remains comfortable and not overwhelming.
For the first three weeks of the winter session, baseball will be the focus. Children will also be introduced to floor hockey, soccer, and basketball throughout the program.
The first day started with simple baseball basics, such as throwing and catching, running the bases and hitting off of a batting tee. Inclyousion Sports Instructor Allison Francis said each week will introduce new skills.
“It’s an introduction to see where their interest falls,” said Francis.
Parents were also invited to take part, which can make everything more comfortable for some children.
“Some kids aren’t ready for the pace of town sports,” said Francis. “I love that this opportunity is available for families in the community.”
Children are divided into two age groups: ages 2 to 4 and 5 to 7. Francis noted that the younger group moves at a slower pace, with activities tailored to toddlers’ attention spans.
The program emphasizes teamwork, encouraging children to clap and cheer for one another. Instructors also lead a group cheer at the end of each practice.
“It’s a safe hub to enjoy sports,” Francis said.
